Superdrug is set to move into the former Tavern Street HMV store in Ipswich - once the entertainment retailer completes its move to its new home at Sailmakers shopping centre.

HMV are currently running a closing down sale before the shop shuts its doors for good on Wednesday, January 10.

The store is set to move into two units in Sailmakers’ Upper Mall, which are currently the home of department store Baldwins.

Planning permission to install new Superdrug signage and refit the Tavern Street shop space was approved by Ipswich Borough Council in November, although it is not yet known when the new Superdrug store will open or what will happen to the two stores that already trade in the town.

Terry Baxter, chairman of Ipswich Central, said he was delighted the shop space was being filled so quickly as it is an important unit on the town’s high street.

“I would have been very disappointed had it been left empty,” he said.

“It is great there is a trader looking to come in so soon after HMV leave.

“HMV’s move will be good for them and will be good for Sailmakers too.

“It will be a key unit in the shopping centre and will increase its footfall, especially among young people.

“I am very pleased to see the town continues to attract retailers.

“You need to keep the momentum going in the town.

“We have got the recent good news that BHS is going to be developed.

“That is another major store that has been closed.

“It is great that the BHS site has had planning permission approved but it would have been a hollow victory had HMV been left empty.

“It tells a very positive story about Ipswich.”

Councillor Adam Leeder, who represents the Alexandra ward, added: “It is great news for the town, we don’t want any shops on the high street to be empty.

“I think what is really important is the work coming up on the Cornhill to spruce up the town centre.

“It will make sure that Ipswich is an attractive place to do business and to open up a new shop. The HMV is right in the heart of the town so it is good news it is being filled.”
