A TEENAGE boy who burnt down his former school has been given a custodial sentence.

A TEENAGE boy who burnt down his former school has been given a custodial sentence.

Daniel Mitson, 15, threw two rocks through a window at St Felix Middle School in Newmarket on August 5 last year and then set fire to classroom nine.

The flames ripped through the roof, and the entire school and contents were destroyed at a cost of �5 million.

Mitson, who has a previous record for causing criminal damage, pleaded guilty to arson.

His barrister, Julian Christopher, said: “This was a prank which went wrong.”

Mitson, of Silverley Way, Ashley, was sentenced to 18 months' detention and training in a young offenders institute by Judge John Devaux, sitting at Ipswich Crown Court.
