A TEENAGER was airlifted to hospital with a suspected head injury today after his car ploughed into a tree.

Fire fighters used cutting equipment to free the 18-year-old who was found trapped in the mangled wreckage of the Ford Orion car near Glevering Hall, Wickham Market.

The crash victim was thought to have been knocked unconscious in the accident which happened on the unclassified road north towards Easton just after 10.30am.

Suffolk police urged motorists to avoid the scene.

The road was closed and traffic diverted while the emergency services aided the victim.

A police spokesman said: "It is a single vehicle road traffic accident, where the vehicle collided with a tree resulting in the single occupant, a male, suffering serious injuries."

The East Anglian Air Ambulance arrived to take the injured man to hospital. A land ambulance was also in attendance.

Fire crews from Woodbridge, Framlingham and Princes Street in Ipswich attended the accident.
