A 19-year-old woman has been raped near Ipswich Railway Station after leaving one of the town's nightclubs.

Scenes of crime officers have been working at the taped-off scene of the attack, and a police officer was also by gates along Ranelagh Road.

The woman had been on a night out with two friends in Kartouche when she left alone at 12.30am to meet her boyfriend who had driven from Colchester to pick her up.

The rapist was sitting on a bench near the station when he started speaking to her.

A police spokesman said the woman did not know the area, and it appears the man walked with her and they cut through an alleyway where the rape happened.

She described the attacker as white, plump and 5ft 5ins tall.

He looked to be aged in his early 20s.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the crime, which happened between 12.30am and 1.30am, to telephone 01473 613500.
