Six teenagers were given a stern warning and safety advice last night after being rescued by lifeboat crews.

Six teenagers were given a stern warning and safety advice last night after being rescued by lifeboat crews.

The teenagers were in a wooden dinghy which was repeatedly running aground near West Mersea.

The West Mersea lifeboat was launched when one of the teenagers dialled 999 at just before 10.15pm calling for help.

A coastguard spokesman said: “All were under the influence of alcohol. They had no safety equipment and were unable to reach shore.''

Lifeboat crew brought the youngsters ashore at West Mersea where they were met by ambulance crews, police and the coastguard.

The spokesman added: Two people had been in the water. They were given a stern warning and safety advice.''
