A winter weather front nicknamed the Beast from the East is set to strike the region early next week - causing temperatures to plummet and the chance of snow flurries.

The cold temperatures will begin to set in over the weekend, getting colder as the week goes on.

Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said the weather front had picked up its dramatic moniker as it is made up of cold air from Siberia which has made its way across eastern Europe.

He said: “The cold weather will make itself known through the weekend.

“Friday will be fine with temperatures of around 5-6C (41-43F)

“By the time we get into Saturday and Sunday there will be a south easterly wind picking up and the maximum temperatures start to fall back again.

“Highs on Saturday will be 4-5C(39-41F), on Sunday the highest temperatures will be 3C (37F).

“It will be a really raw feeling starting the weekend.

“Monday will be dry with highs around 2-3C (35-37F).

“Tuesday is the first time we may see snow flurries.

“There will not be a great deal of snow but more should fall overnight into Wednesday.

“And it is certainly looking cold into the rest of the week, with temperatures of 2-3C (35-37F), with sharp nighttime frosts.”
