A woman who said she fought off a man during an attempted sex attack in an Ipswich street has spoken of her terror while reliving the ordeal.

A 30-year-old Ipswich man is currently on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of sexual offences following the alleged assault in Burrell Road at around 8am last Saturday.

The woman said: “I just heard someone behind me.

“They grabbed me by my arm and said in a calm voice it was going to be ok and not to panic. They ran me into a wall by the side of this house.”

She said the man put his hand round her throat, said he wanted sex and told her to keep calm.

“I was terrified – just shocked,” she added.

During the incident the woman sustained grazing but was not badly hurt.

She said: “When he saw I was bleeding he stopped, looked at me and ran away.

“I looked down the driveway and he was running towards the train station.

“I couldn’t really breathe. I broke down and cried.”

The woman said she dashed across the road to get help but no one was in when she knocked on the door of a property. She then tried to use a phone box but the phone was not working.

Eventually she ran to another property where she found someone at home and raised the alarm.

Police have said a suspect was arrested on Wednesday night and taken to Martlesham Heath police investigation centre for questioning.

He remained in custody yesterday before being released on bail until February 3 pending further inquiries.

Officers are still appealing for witnesses and have asked anyone who can help the inquiry team to telephone Ipswich CID on 101 quoting reference number IC/14/5161.

Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
