Labour takes Ipswich from the Tories

Undoubtedly the story of the night in Suffolk was Ben Gummer’s shock defeat in Ipswich. His majority of 3,733 from two years ago was wiped out by Labour’s Sandy Martin, who had a slim majority of 831.

Mr Martin accepted he had not expected to win when first selected to fight the seat “but as I started to talk to local people I got a real sense that they wanted change.”

There were very high turnouts across the county

Every constituency in Suffolk had a higher turnout than in the 2015 election. This was seen as being particularly important in Ipswich, as more young Labour voters took part.

Labour had hoped to challenge Peter Aldous in Waveney, but it failed to materialise.

In fact, Mr Aldous, who has been MP since 2010, won the seat with 28,643 votes, increasing his majority on the 2015 result.

It was a good night for the other Tories in safe Suffolk seats

Every other seat in the county went as expected.

James Cartlidge remains South Suffolk MP

• Dan Poulter is Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP

• Therese Coffey is Suffolk Coastal MP

• Matt Hancock is West Suffolk MP

Jo Churchill is Bury St Edmunds MP

The UKIP vote collapsed in every seat

It was disastrous night for UKIP, and their votes from 2015 seemed to be split between Labour and the Tories in Ipswich, although in Waveney it seemed most went to the Tories.

The Lib Dems and Greens made little impact

The parties made little impression, and in some cases lost their deposit after failing to get 5% of the vote.
