The historic Ipswich pub that once hosted Ed Sheeran have officially shut with the owners hoping that it can be re-opened.
The Swan in Kings Street was engulfed by rumours it would be shutting last month after it didn’t open for business.
Now the owners of the music venue have made it clear the pub’s lease has ended and that the free-house is closed.
A spokesperson for Ei Publican Partnerships said: “We can confirm that The Swan, Ipswich is currently shut.
“We would like to reassure the local community that we plan to reopen the site as soon as possible.”
The Ei Group plc also put a notice on the door of the pub stating they had re-entered the property and that its lease was at an end.
The full statement reads: “Take notice that we Ei Group plc the freehold owner person entitled to the possession of the premises have today re-entered the premises and the lease is at an end.
“All enquiries concerning the property should be sent in writing, quoting the name and address of the premises.”
The statement is dated Friday, September 14 and signed by ‘S. Bow’.
The Ei Group have refused to divulge the identity of who signed the notice.
The pub’s former landlord David Yates has refused to speak about the future of The Swan but has stated the Ei Group have made no contact with him since he agreed to close.
Rumours began to spread after the pub did not open on several days at the end of August, with speculation mounting on social media over whether time had been called.
The Swan, thought to have been built as early as 1689, stands on Kings Street. Major alterations were made to the establishment in 1707 and it was listed as ‘The White Swan’ in 1839.
The pub’s stage has been graced by the likes of Mumford and Sons, Slaves and Lonely the Brave, and it was also a frequent supporter of local acts with its own annual Swanfest festival becoming a permanent fixture.
The pub also held a three-day live music festival as recently as July 27.
Of late The Swan has been showing-off a collection of metal bands from around the globe but it was once a venue for the Suffolk superstar Ed Sheeran.
The singer-songwriter can be seen in old Youtube footage performing original versions of his hit songs ‘The A-Team’ and ‘You Need Me’ in the pub in 2010.
The gig ended up being taken out onto the pavement outside, with a small band of fans following as he performed more songs.
The news comes just weeks after the Office for National Statistics figures showed that Ipswich had lost more than a quarter of its pubs since 2010.
