A HELICOPTER hovered above Ipswich town centre after thieves climbed onto the roof of a building and stole four tons of lead.
The thieves took the metal from the roof of the Old County Hall on St Helen's Street at about 2pm yesterday.
Suffolk police was alerted to the theft by someone inside the building and the police helicopter was dispatched to try to help locate the offenders.
A spokesman for the police confirmed that the thieves had gained entry to the building before making off with a large quantity of lead flashing.
Officers searched the building but were unable to find the culprits.
