A PLAY written by Frank Williams – the actor who played the vicar in Dad's Army – is to be performed in Ipswich tomorrow night.

The Substitute is to be produced and performed by people of all ages from Whitton Baptist Church, along with Pastor Brian Ward playing the leading role.

It tells the story of a murderer condemned to death with two other men. The play follows him as he is told that he has been set free because another man has taken his place on death row.

He meets and talks to the soldiers who carried out the execution, as well as the mother and friends of the substitute.

In trying to find out why this happened, he uncovers a huge plot which includes a traitor, the soldiers, and another condemned prisoner.

The show, which organisers say may not be suitable for children under eight, will start each night at 7.30pm, tomorrow , Friday and Saturday at the church in Highfield Road.

Tickets are priced at £3 for adults and £2 concessions.

They can be bought in advance by telephoning 01473 830072, with any surplus being available on the door.
