AN OVERWHELMING majority of viewers want Helen McDermott reinstated as presenter of Anglia's six o'clock news, according to votes registered on a "Save Our Helen" website.

Thousands of people gave their verdict on the decision to move Ms McDermott from the evening news to an afternoon magazine programme.

Viewers voted 95.5 per cent on the Norwich-based internet company Freeboon in favour of her remaining as an evening news presenter.

Voters' comments included one who said: "Helen is warm and brilliant all at once and has great affection in the hearts of East Anglians. I will now be watching BBC Look East."

Anglia has denied suggestions that "ageism" played a part in its decision to move Ms McDermott and install Clare Weller, 33, and Richard Swallow, 45, as the regular hosts of the teatime news.

An Anglia statement said: "The result is what you might expect from a website whose title "Save Our Helen" encouraged people to vote in a particular way.

"Anglia's decision on the presentation of its six o'clock news programme was taken for sound broadcasting reasons and we stand by it. Helen remains a key member of our programme team."

Martin Kentish, of Freeboon, said: "Although it may not bring about any change at Anglia, at least the bosses now have with them the results proving the unpopularity of the decision."

n What do you think?

Should Helen McDermott continue presenting the Anglia TV teatime news or will she be better suited to the afternoon slot?
