A PLOT to smuggle more than 15,000 bottles of whiskey and gin into the UK has been foiled at Felixstowe docks.

Officers from the UK Border Agency seized 15,840 bottles of spirits, which had arrived from Spain, on Thursday, August 27, and would have cost the government 136,000 in lost revenue.

It is believed the bottles were destined for an unauthorised warehouse and would therefore have evaded excise duty.

Jim Jarvie, deputy regional director central region of the UK Border Agency, said: “This was an excellent detection.

“We will continue to work hard to tackle criminals out to make a profit by cheating British tax payers and undercutting honest local traders.”

No arrests have yet been made and investigations are continuing. The seized alcohol will be poured away.
