Tobacco smuggling plot foiled at Ipswich

SMUGGLED cigarettes and tobacco worth thousands of pounds have been seized by customs officers in Suffolk.

One hundred thousand fags and 292kg of tobacco, worth £52,000 in tax revenue, were confiscated at Ipswich docks on Saturday, after the stash was discovered in among 27 boxes of cargo from Ghent in Belgium.

SMUGGLED cigarettes and tobacco worth thousands of pounds have been seized by customs officers in Suffolk.

One hundred thousand fags and 292kg of tobacco, worth £52,000 in tax revenue, were confiscated at Ipswich docks on Saturday, after the stash was discovered in among 27 boxes of cargo from Ghent in Belgium.

The goods had arrived on a lorry from Ostend on the vessel MV Anglian Way which docked at 6.40am.

The lorry's Belgian driver was interviewed and released without charge.
