A SENIOR Suffolk politician today called for council tax to be scrapped – as her colleagues started paving the way for more big increases next year.

Liberal Democrat Baroness Ros Scott said her party's campaign to replace council tax with a local income tax was being given a big boost by fears of more big rises.

Top Lib Dem MP Edward Davey also told the Evening Star today that efforts of campaigns like that in Suffolk meant the days of council tax were numbered.

"It is just so unfair – a local income tax is used in other countries across Europe, in the USA and in Japan. The facilities are there on the Inland Revenue's computer to introduce this fairly easily," said Mr Davey.
