SUFFOLK'S chief probation officer is to swap his executive office for a day fronting the company's reception as part of a raffle prize.

John Budd, chief officer of Suffolk Probation Area, handed over a day off work in the company's Christmas raffle - and promised to cover the winner's absence himself.

A probation officer in the drug rehabilitation requirement team won the prize but so many staff wanted one of the Ipswich headquarters' receptionists to win, Mr Budd agreed to do it anyway.

The job switch takes place tomorrow - the busiest day of the week - and will see Mr Budd give up his fifth floor executive office for the front desk of reception.

Among the tasks he will undertake will be taking messages off the answer machine, open post, logging letters, dealing with offenders at reception, taking phone calls, booking in visitors and reimbursing offenders' travel costs.

Mr Budd said: “I am looking forward to my day in reception. As chief officer, my work sometimes seems like one long round of meetings. It will be great to be back at the coalface and dealing with offenders again.”
