Ipswich Operatic Society, which won the rights to perform the regional premiere of Evita next April, is now celebrating a theatrical scoop.

Members are over the moon after hearing they have also won the rights to do Copacabana too, which will be performed in September next year.

Evening Star theatre critic Carol Carver said the two top shows will be of London quality.

She said: "These are the two big shows on the circuit at the moment. They are high quality, nearly London shows and people who would otherwise have to go to the capital, will be able to see them here in Ipswich instead.

"The prestige of the Society has been recognised among the people who have control of these rights, and members are on top of the world. To get one show is brilliant, to get two is just amazing."

Members of the Society are currently rehearsing for Sounds Familiar, to be shown at the Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe, this autumn, so casting for the new shows will take place in due course.

She said Barry Manilow's Copacabana was colourful, spectacular and romantic, and would make a "fantastic pair" when performed in conjunction with Andrew Lloyd Webber's dramatic Evita, which has starred big names like Elaine Paige and Marti Webb in the West End.

Madonna was the star of the film version, with co-star Antonio Banderas.

Copocabana - to be performed from September 23 at the Regent - is penned by Bruce Sussman and Jack Feltman.
