Tory triumphs in Stow by-election

CONSERVATIVE candidate Alastair Liddell has triumphed in the Stowmarket North and Stowupland by-election.

CONSERVATIVE candidate Alastair Liddell has triumphed in the Stowmarket North and Stowupland by-election.

The Suffolk County Council by-election, which took place yesterday , was staged following the resignation of Eleanor Ramsey.

Mr Liddell secured 628 votes, nearly 200 more than runner-up Nicky Turner, the Liberal Democrat candidate.

Duncan Macpherson (Labour) finished third with 317 votes.

Stowmarket mayor Frank Whittle, standing as an independent after his exit from the Tory party, finished sixth, polling 132 votes.

The election turnout was 26 per cent.
