A NEW doctors surgery, larger schools and better recreation facilities are just some of the improvements needed if a new nuclear power station is built near a Suffolk town.

Councillors outlined a “wish list” of what they would like to see happen in Leiston should a third nuclear reactor get the go-ahead in nearby Sizewell.

Along with improvements in health care, sporting facilities and education they also suggested traffic calming measures, the introduction of CCTV and better community services.

Tony Cooper, chairman of Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council, said he was concerned that the large numbers of people moving into the area for work would put pressure on doctors and teachers.

“The need for a surgery is desperate now,” he said. “We are moving into a two tier education system. With the middle school set to close I think we would have to build more primary and high schools in the area.”

Councillors Frank Huxley and Terry Hodgson also called for improved recreation facilities - including an upgrade to the sports centre and swimming pool.

It was also suggested that a contribution could be made towards the running of Leiston's film theatre as workers living near the Sizewell site could use the facility.

Councillor Colin Ginger said that CCTV cameras should be introduced to the town in a bid to discourage would be criminals, while councillor David Bailey said he would like to see better traffic control.

“We all know what the through traffic will be like,” he said. “We need to have improved management to make the town more accessible.”

In a bid to ease the expected congestion it was also suggested that large HGVs be forced to use the A12 rather than narrow country lanes.

Earlier this year the government listed Sizewell as a potential site for a new generation of nuclear reactors and EDF Energy announced that it would like to build an additional power station there.
