POLICE swooped today to detain a balaclava-clad man brandishing a toy gun in Ipswich town centre.

CCTV operators at Ipswich Borough Council alerted police when they spotted the man in Westgate Street outside Marks and Spencers just before 3.20pm this afternoon .

Armed police were dispatched to the scene but were stood down before they arrived as the man had been arrested in Cornhill by a uniformed officer and the weapon was found to be a toy.
