TRAFFIC was in chaos today on one of the busiest approach roads into Ipswich after a sewer collapsed and part of the road had to be closed.

Engineers had cordoned off part of Woodbridge Road near the junction of Warwick road while they began repair work on the sewer which collapsed at teatime yesterday.

Temporary traffic lights were set up, but the problem caused major traffic problems yesterday evening and at rush-hour today.

A spokesman for Ipswich Borough Council, which was carrying out the repairs, said: "We are treating this as a matter of great urgency because it is causing a great deal of disruption."

This area of Woodbridge Road already has roadworks at the site of the old convent.
