Drivers using Wherstead Road in Ipswich are facing long delays over the next few days as gas engineers try to isolate and repair a gas leak under the road.
Temporary traffic lights have been set up which caused serious problems for commuters heading towards Ipswich town centre on Thursday morning.
A spokesman for Cadent, the business which now distributes gas across the country, said it often took some time for engineers to find out how long it would take to make a repair.
The work could take a week to complete – but the spokesman said that engineers were hoping to complete the work by the end of this week once the gas pipe was repaired and the trench was re-covered again.
Traffic was slowed and drivers faced a longer-than-normal queue to get into the town on Thursday and drivers will be hoping that the engineers manage to sort out the problem sooner than the one-week deadline that is currently in place for their work.
