PASSENGERS heading to the region were forced to abandon their train today after the vehicle suffered brake problems.

Emergency services initially received reports of a possible fire on the 4.30pm Liverpool Street to Norwich service.

But National Express East Anglia (NXEA) later said it was just smoke issuing from the brakes.

A spokesman for NXEA said: “The problem is being looked into. It is friction-related and the wheels do get hot in these circumstances.”

The train continued to Ilford station, where it terminated at around 16.43 and passengers were directed onto other services.

The incident caused delays to some trains and forced the cancellation of the 7pm Norwich to Liverpool Street service.
