A TRAIN driver was lucky to escape unhurt when youths threw a stone through the window of a moving Suffolk train.

British Transport Police today issued a warning following the incident in Elmswell.

Youths standing on a bridge are reported to have thrown stones at the maintenance train at about 7.30pm yesterday.

One of the stones smashed through the driver's window and narrowly missed him. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

However, a spokesman for British Transport Police today said the incident could have had devastating consequences.

Pc Bill Maytham said: "If it had been a passenger train it could have been much worse.

"It gave the driver the scare of his life, it could have blinded him and then he would be unable to work – it was such a silly and dangerous thing to do."

He added that nobody had been arrested but that inquiries were ongoing.

If anybody has any information about the incident they are asked to call 01473 601978.
