TWO Suffolk-based transport workers were today convicted of serious offences after the death of a motorist on the A12.

Haulier Martin Graves, of Trimley near Felixstowe, was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury at Basildon Crown Court following the death of Lee Fitt on the A12 near Colchester in 2001.

He was also found guilty of four charges of falsifying tachograph records. He was cleared of a fifth charge. He had denied all the charges.

Lorry driver Victor Coates, of Maidstone Road in Felixstowe, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. He had denied that charge.

He had earlier admitted three charges of falsifying tachograph records.

The convictions came at the end of a 28-week trial at Basildon which heard that a lorry owned by Graves' company and driven by Coates had crashed into Mr Fitt's car which had stopped beside the A12.

Mr Fitt died after being hit by the lorry as he got out of his car to see why it had stopped.

The judge was considering sentence late today.
