Firefighters from Essex were called to help today after a tree split and fell onto the roof of a cottage in Little Sampford, near Saffron Walden.

One woman was in the property at the time of the incident at 3.20pm but was not hurt.

Sub Officer Steve Morris, of Thaxted fire station, said: “It appears that the tree was damaged in the high winds on Friday night and had split and finally fell onto the roof of this cottage this afternoon.

“We have secured the tree with line to prevent it moving further and are hard at work with bow saws removing smaller branches. But we will have to wait for local authority engineers to arrive with chainsaws as the trunk is far too thick for us to attempt to tackle with our equipment.
