CHAINSAWS ripped through the early morning tranquillity in Ipswich's Christchurch park as tree surgeons operated on some sickly ash trees.

In a delicate operation, performed by the specialist firm Nationwide Access and supervised by the borough council parks department, six trees will be removed from the wooded area next to Fonnereau Road.

As the 60ft trees were too dangerous to climb, a high-lift access platform was being used to carefully dismantle them.

Parks department supervisor, Dean Welham, said: "The trees have got a fungal infection which is rotting the heartwood and sapping the trees strength.

"The whole tree will have to come down starting with the crown, followed by the main trunk."

Anyone wanting to buy some of the timber should telephone Ipswich 433533.
