Tributes have been paid to a “cheeky and popular” talented sportsman who has died at the age of just 20.

Avid football fan Joe Sharpe, from Felixstowe, had been studying a BSc football coaching and performance degree at the University of Chichester where he was in the second year of the course.

The former Kesgrave High School pupil and talented footballer played for a number of local teams in both the Felixstowe and Needham Market areas.

His family still lives in Felixstowe.

A university spokesman said he was “saddened” to confirm Joe’s death following a short illness.

Daniel Potter, programme leader for the football coaching and performance degree, said: “Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and close friends at this difficult time.

“We will remember Joe as a popular, confident, and cheeky young man who was fanatical about all things football – including his favourite team Wolves.”

Luke Sheavyn, president of men’s football, added: “We have a close-knit community here at Chichester and have all been affected by Joe’s death.

“He was passionate about football and was usually seen playing right-back. He was always willing to lend his time to others, whether as a student rep or coach for Chichester City’s Women’s Team, which was a testament to his loving personality.”

A minute’s silence was held by one of his former teams in Felixstowe on Saturday, January 16.

The university and its students’ union have also set aside a goalmouth on its football pitch as a memorial where flowers and tributes can be laid. There is also an opportunity to contribute to a book celebrating Joe’s life.

A funeral service will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, Felixstowe, on Thursday, January 28 at 1.45pm.

Joe died at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester on January 13.
