POLICE are warning villagers today to be on their guard after tricksters struck in Nayland.

The incident took place between 3 and 3.15pm on Thursday.

An 82-year-old woman was at her home with her teenage granddaughters when there was a knock at the door.

The man at the door asked the woman if she wanted any gardening work carried out.

As she did, the lady invited the man into the hallway. He said he would carry out the work now and wanted £25.

As the woman said she wanted the work to start next week the offender went into the garden with one of the granddaughters and asked the other granddaughter to go down the road to get his work mates.

He then went back into the house and locked the granddaughter out.

The offender went into the lounge where the lady was sitting, picked up her handbag and removed a quantity of money. The lady shouted at him as he left the house.

The man is described as a white male with dark hair and a speech impediment, he was wearing a navy sweatshirt, black sports trousers with elasticised ankles, white socks and black trainers.

He was seen to drive away in a blue car.

Anyone with information or who recognises the description of the offender should call Det Con Ramsey at Hadleigh Police on 01473 383441.
