Trimley: Anger as barriers to cut noise from juggernauts are axed

A top-level meeting is to take place to discuss the axing today of a long-awaited project to put acoustic barriers alongside the A14 to cut traffic noise.

Residents have waited nearly a decade for the �400,000 of fencing to be built alongside the A14 – suffering increasingly from the sound of lorries heading to and from the Port of Felixstowe.

Disappointed residents at Trimley St Mary have now been told the barriers – similar to those on the A14 at Cambridge – would not work, and would be too expensive.

Parish councillor Graham Harding said: “ I think this is a cop out.

“We have been waiting and waiting for this fencing to go up and now we are suddenly told it will not happen.

“They say it will not cause a significant reduction in noise levels, but it works at Cambridge and other places, so why will it not work here? I think there are some serious questions which need answering.

“If this doesn’t happen, we should take it right to the top and the Ombudsman and get him to look into it in depth.”

Parish council chairman Mary Dixon said: “It is extremely disappointing because these barriers were to compensate for the build up of traffic over many years as well as the extra traffic forecast in the future. It needs further investigation.”

Councillors want the fencing put up but believe other measures such as noise-cutting road surfacing and double-glazing should be examined.

It is forecast that when the port’s development is complete, there will be one million extra lorries a year using the A14.

Port head of corporate affairs Paul Davey said a meeting would take place between parish councillors, district council and Highways Agency officials, and the port executives to discuss the situation.

He said expert analysis believed the barriers would not be very effective, would be considerably more expensive than first envisaged and installation would disrupt people’s gardens, and a combination of these factors had led to the project being reconsidered.
