THREE Hungarians charged with smuggling cigarettes into England via Felixstowe have been denied bail.

Zoltan Anosi, Istvan Kiss and Janos Zrinyi appeared at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court yesterday.

They are all accused of being involved in the importation of eight million cigarettes into the country.

Robin Bartsch, prosecuting the case for Customs and Excise, said the unpaid duty on the goods amounted to £1.25m. The goods are said to have been smuggled in the country in a container on November 27.

Anosi, 30, Kiss, 35, and Zrinyi, 29, all from Hungary, have yet to enter pleas to the charge of fraudulent evasion of duty.

Trilby Millett, representing Anosi, Benjamin Squirrell, representing Kiss, and Ify Uchendu, representing Zrinyi, all made applications for their clients to be released on bail. The application was denied by magistrates.

The defendants were remanded in custody to return to the same court on December 18.
