UNBELIEVABLE as it may sound, British Gas experts today urged its Suffolk customers to turn up the heat even more – and switch on the central heating!

Officials were not suffering from sunstroke either, but decided the hottest day of the year was the best one for reminding people not to neglect their heating systems and end up cold in winter.

On many central heating systems, circulation pumps are not needed to heat water during the summer months and can be idle for long periods.

This often leads to a spate of early autumn breakdowns when people switch back on – and could be prevented by running the central heating for short periods during the hottest days.

"It may seem mad but the hottest day of the year is the best time to remind people to check their central heating," said British Gas spokesman Alan McLaughlin.

"Turning on the system once a month for just ten minutes could make all the difference and save money."

The company says turning the heating on for ten minutes – just long enough for radiators to start heating up – costs about four pence. It is advising people to mark a monthly reminder on their calendars.
