Two people have been arrested after a man was stabbed in Haverhill yesterday evening.

Officers were called to the incident which took place around 6.10pm in the car park near the entrance to Haverhill Rugby Club on School Lane.

The victim, a man in his 30s, suffered a single stab wound to the chest which punctured his lung, and he currently remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Police said the victim was with a friend in a white Vauxhall Astra and after both men got out of the vehicle, they were approached by a group of five or six males.

An altercation is then understood to have taken place and one of the men stabbed the victim with a knife.

Both the victim and his friend then got back into the car and drove a short distance down School Lane before calling emergency services.

The victim was treated by the East of England Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

Officers attended and a short time later arrested an 18-year-old man from Haverhill on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

A teenage girl, also from Haverhill, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre to be questioned by detectives.

A police cordon is currently in place to allow investigations to continue.

Witnesses or anyone with information regarding the incident are asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 34609/18.
