Officers found a “significant quantity” of drug wraps as well as weapons after arresting two men following a suspected deal in Ipswich.

Police involved in a crackdown on drug dealing and violence were on patrol in the Belstead Road area of the town when they witnessed the suspected drug deal take place Heatherhayes at around 7.15pm yesterday.

Officers arrested two men and discovered drugs wraps following a search of the area. A knife and a spanner were also recovered.

A 19-year-old man from Newham in east London was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

A 20-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of Class B drugs.

The men were taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where they remain this evening.

It comes after Suffolk Constabulary announced that a crackdown on drug dealing in Ipswich and the violence that surrounds it has led to more than 60 arrests in seven weeks.

Operation Woven was launched in March with the aim of deterring crime and anti-social behaviour linked to dealing and drug use.
