TWO people have died after a crash between a lorry and a car on the A47 near King's Lynn.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, at East Winch just east of King's Lynn, and a two year old child was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 12 mile section of the single carriageway road, one of the major trunk roads into Norfolk, is to be shut, it is estimated, until about 3pm following the crash. The closure will be shut from the Hardwick Roundabout at King's Lynn to the B1153 near Narborough.

Police, fire fighters and ambulance crews were called to the scene, at East Winch, at about 10am. The police helicopter and air ambulance were also called to the crash site.

The female driver of the car, a silver Renault Espace, died at the scene, the ambulance service said. A two year old child in the car was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King's Lynn with serious injuries.

The driver of the blue articulated lorry, thought to be carrying sand, was said not to be seriously injured but was also taken to the QEH for checks.

Police and the fire service members are at still at the scene, on the approach to the village, which has a 50mph speed limit, which is expected to be blocked off for several hours as police investigate the scene. Five fire crews from King's Lynn and Swaffham had originally been called to attend. Two were still on scene at about 11.30am.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the crash.
