A campaign raising money towards the opening of Suffolk’s first law centre has received a cash boost.
Sarah Sanford, vice-chairwoman of the Suffolk branch of Unite the Union, has handed over a cheque for £1,000 to staff at Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality (ISCRE), which spearheaded the initiative.
Suffolk Law Centre will offer free legal advice, casework and representation to people who cannot afford to pay costs.
The campaign, backed by this newspaper, has raised around £9,500 of its £40,000 target.
Ms Sanford said: “Unite believes that this is a very important and necessary project, and wish it every success.”
ISCRE’s director of legal services, Audrey Ludwig, added: “Such a generous donation from Unite is heartening at this point in our campaign.”
The online crowdfunder has now closed but people can still donate by contacting ALawCentreforSuffolk@iscre.org.uk or sending a cheque payable to ISCRE to the charity’s Ipswich office in St Matthews Street.
