The Waterfront Gallery, at UCS on Ipswich Waterfront is hosting an exciting display of modern Chinese art.

Contemporary Chinese Works On Paper curated by Marco Cali, Robert Priseman and Mengmeng Wang will be on display in University Campus Suffolk’s Waterfront Gallery until August 1.

The exciting contemporary exhibition includes works by distinguished artists from Xi’an China.

The display gives a snapshot of the current work and concerns for those living through one of the greatest social upheavals in modern times.

This exhibition includes contemporary drawings from China by some outstanding artists.

Robert Priseman, founder of Contemporary British Painting and Fellow at UCS, has been working with both Mengmeng Wang and Marco Cali to bring this international event to the region.

This exhibition comes after a successful exhibition of works on paper Notes From China at the Minories Art Gallery in Colchester.

These prestigious artists’ works reflect decades of transition from traditional art to the current and dynamic presentation of what contemporary art is occurring in China today, explained Robert.

As a counter point to the work of the Chinese artists, British artist Wendy Elia’s multi-ethnic work Made In Britain is also included.

This event represents the collaborative efforts of top artists from both China and our region and their resulting dialogues about contemporary art, he added.

Dr Lisa Wade, head of Department of Arts and Humanities at University Campus Suffolk said: “We are thrilled to welcome this exciting partnership to our Department of Arts and Humanities, indeed as a partnership which is as much about a reciprocal exchange of philosophies and ideas as it is about the exhibition of artworks. We hope that the resultant dialogue will ensure a collaboration which is the first of many for the brand new University of Suffolk.”

This powerful exhibition will open at the Museum of Modern Art in Xi’an, China in August 2016 after leaving UCS’ Waterfront Gallery.

Alongside the exhibition here, eight distinguished Chinese artists and curators have travelled from Xi’an, China to exchange ideas with eight outstanding British artists and curators in the Symposium Exchanging Notes With China, being held at the university.

These discussions bring together Chinese and British artists to discuss the radical creativity of contemporary art.

The Symposium Exchanging Notes With China will take place on Monday August 1 starting at 9.15am in Lecture Theatre 1 in the Waterfront Building. Those interested in attending should book via the UCS Online Shop www.link.ucs.ac.uk

Admission to the UCS Waterfront Gallery is free and all are welcome.

The Waterfront Gallery is currently open from Monday to Friday.
