Rushmere: Damage caused to Rushmere Common following a major blaze is today being assessed.
Firefighters remained at the scene of the heathland fire for several hours to ensure it did not re-ignite.
The fire engulfed a 300 square-metre area of gorse and scrubland at Rushmere Common yesterday around 3pm, causing disruption to traffic on nearby Woodbridge Road.
At the height of the blaze, five fire crews were at the scene near Linksfield.
The flames were extinguished shortly after 4pm but firefighters remained on site well into the evening to ensure the blaze did not re-ignite.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said last night it was too early to say if the fire was started deliberately.
