A 61-year-old man remains in a critical condition after suffering a suspected heart attack following an alleged theft at his Ipswich home.

Police were called to Burlington Road shortly after 5pm on Sunday by the ambulance service, who said they were treating the man after he had suffered a suspected cardiac arrest in his home, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

He said officers at the scene were then made aware of a theft that had taken place earlier inside his home. It is thought £20 was taken by someone the man knew.

After being treated by paramedics, the 61-year-old, who has not been identified, was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

He remains in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Meanwhile a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft at around 7pm on Sunday.

The man, Joseph Newton, of no fixed abode, was charged with theft and is due to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court this morning.
