A LANDMARK Ipswich sculpture has an uncertain future today after being placed in storage while awaiting repair.

The life-size bronze bull, unveiled outside the New Wolsey Theatre in Civic Drive in December 2006, has been removed after it was targeted by vandals.

The sculpture is currently awaiting work to repair the damage caused.

However, town chiefs today said it was unclear where the bull would go after the refurbishment was complete as its former position adjacent to the former Civic Centre building is set for redevelopment.

Developer Turnstone has been granted permission to build a massive supermarket as well as landscaped walkways, a restaurant and large public space on the land.

A spokesman for Ipswich Borough Council confirmed: “It is in storage as we are repairing it because it was vandalised.

“We are also talking to Turnstone because they have expressed an interest as they might want it as part of the Westgate Centre.

“If they don't we will keep it in storage until we find a suitable location.”

The weighty sculpture was donated to the town by retired GP Dev Mukerji.

Dr Mukerji presented the gift in appreciation of all Ipswich had given him.

Speaking at the time, he said: “I have lived in the Ipswich area for 46 years and worked both at Ipswich Hospital and in general practice.

“I've had a good life here and there are lots of reasons to be grateful for being in Ipswich and it is nice to be able to give something back.”
