The statue, in Portman Road, was unveiled on July 16 to mark the importance of one of Ipswich's favourite sons.
Police were told about the damage by Ipswich Borough Council early today and they are investigating it.
Lisa Wilson, a police spokesperson said: "We were informed of the damage at around 10.15am by the council and we are now investigating it. This is a mindless act of vandalism to an important piece of art in the town."
The vandalism comes just weeks after the statue, made by Town fan Sean Hedges-Quinn, was unveiled by the Newcastle United boss.
