VEGETABLES, flowers and handicrafts of all shapes, sizes and colours were on display at the 25th Capel St Mary Allotments Association Flower and Produce Show.

VEGETABLES, flowers and handicrafts of all shapes, sizes and colours were on display at the 25th Capel St Mary Allotments Association flower and produce show.

The annual show, held at the Village Hall, in Capel St Mary, attracted nearly 600 entries in more than 130 different classes at the weekend.

Entries of the highest quality were received from people across the region, with various vegetables, flower displays, photographs, handicrafts and food displayed at the show. Representatives of the Royal Horticultural Society were on hand to judge the vegetable classes, with the other classes judged by regional experts.

Phil Hickley, committee member of the association, was delighted with the quality of the exhibits.

He said: "We have got entries from all types of people, young and old, experienced and inexperienced. It has been a very good year going by the quality of the produce. The quality is as good as we have ever had.

"We have kept the numbers up and we have more people exhibiting this year than we did last year. It is a very popular village attraction and is one of the biggest and popular shows in the local community."

The exhibits on display at the show were the result of many months' hard work by the entrants. Andrew Tokely, who scooped the prize for the best leeks in any one variety, planted his leeks in November last year.

He said: "I am delighted to win, really chuffed. I have been showing here since 1984 but I have had a few years' break and I actually provided a cup for other people to compete in at the show.

"But, after being persuaded to take part myself, I have ended up winning my own cup!"
