SECOND World War veterans will be reliving their memories when Debach Airfield opens up to the public.

Veterans from the USA will be making a special journey for the open day on June 15.

The overseas guests of honour will include Jack Feller, the President of the

493rd Bombardment Group Memorial Association who were based at Debach and arrived in April 1944.

They were known by the nickname 'Helton's Hell Cats' after the commanding officer, Colonel Helton.

The open day is a chance to see the restoration work on the Control Tower

and the buildings on the technical site which are not usually open to the

public.

Debach is unique because of the amount of buildings surviving from that period, including the Norden Bomb Site vault and the parachute store and fire station.

It will also include a WWII military vehicle display of jeeps, a tank

destroyer and trucks, tours of the airfield and a patrol of 'USAAF

personnel, land army girls and home front soldiers.

A fly past will take also take place depending on the weather.

The airfield is in Clopton, off the B1078 north east of Ipswich.

The open day runs between 10am to 5pm and entry costs £3 with proceeds going to the Control Tower restoration fund.
