A MAN who died after his car plunged into an Essex river has today been named by police.
George Sargent, 70, from Kingsman Farm Road Caravan Park, Hullbridge died when his car left the road and was submerged in the river.
Emergency services launched a dramatic rescue operation on the banks of the River Crouch just before 5pm yesterday.
The car was located 50 metres from the river's edge just before 7pm and the man was rescued some 20 minutes later.
Police, coastguards, fire crews and the RNLI were all involved in the rescue which began at shortly before 5pm.
Essex Fire Service confirmed the man had died and said it was the second time in seven days that an incident there had resulted in a fatality.
A post mortem is due to be held and police are appealing for any witnesses who have not already contacted them to phone Rayleigh road policing unit on 0300 333 4444.
