Two people were injured during a fight between a group of men at Barclays bank in Ipswich this morning.
Police were called to the bank in Princes Street at 11.25am to reports of an altercation.
Witnesses at the scene said the men started arguing outside Waitrose before spilling into the bank where a fire extinguisher and furniture were thrown.
Two men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray and they are being questioned at the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
Officers are searching for further offenders and any witnesses are urged to get in touch.
Warren Alexander-Dean, who witnessed the incident, said: “I heard a loud bang and I thought it might be a gun fire.
“It went on for a few minutes and staff were very shocked and intimidated.”
Mr Alexander-Dean said the men ran down Princes Street towards the Willis building.
Another witness who works in the area but did not want to be named said some of the bank’s staff were almost in tears after the incident.
“That’s enough to shock anyone, think of all the innocent bystanders, people with kids and pushchairs and babies,” he added.
Syed Ahmed, who works in nearby food stall Biryani Hut, said: “They were fighting each other and throwing tables and metal barriers.
“One of them shouted ‘the police are coming’ and they ran down Princes Street.
“There were lots of people watching outside including the staff and they were all trying to call the police.”
A Barclays spokesman said the bank would remain closed for the rest of the day but should be open as normal tomorrow.
