Despite consistent criticism from the BBC One show's judges, the 64-year-old received strong support from the public and managed to avoid the boot week after week.
But Sergeant said in a statement on Wednesday: “The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me that would be a joke too far.”
The Evening Star took to the streets of Ipswich to gauge the public opinion's on the news.
