SUFFOLK artists have been given a boost after they benefited from a new project to improve visual arts in the region.

Awards for Artists is managed by Commissions East in partnership with East England Arts and the main aim is to nurture talent by providing opportunities for artists to experiment and develop their work.

With awards totalling more than £35,000 it is a great help for many struggling artists who would like to see their work take a new direction.

Annabel Dover and Nadia Hebson are two of the lucky beneficiaries and have been given £2,500 towards an exhibition at the Tide Mill in Woodbridge.

They are aiming to work with a range of different community groups to create a painting in which, "documentation, memoir and myth will overlap to form an atmospheric monument to the place".

Other Suffolk artists set to benefit include Les Bicknell who has been given £3,000 to collaborate with the writer John Brooks to develop an audio tour of imagined art works.

Jane Grisewood has been given £1,030 to research and develop a new exhibition at the North House Gallery, Manningtree.

Tesxtile artist, Emily Chapman, also from Suffolk has been given £517 to exhibit her work at the Chelsea Crafts Fair next year.

In total 17 artists are being awarded money to help them promote their work.
