Volkswagen Passat crashes into brick wall and ends up in mosque car park at Argyle Street/Woodbridge Road junction, Ipswich

A man has been arrested after a car crashed through a brick wall and into the car park of a mosque in Ipswich.

A red Volkswagen Passat was involved in a single-vehicle collision at the junction of Argyle Street and Woodbridge Road shortly before 7pm this evening.

Police said they are treating the incident as a “straightforward road traffic collision”.

The driver left the scene of the incident but was later detained by officers, police said.

A 24-year-old man from Ipswich has been arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified and drink driving.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.

Suffolk Constabulary said in a statement: “Police were called today, Monday August 21, at just before 7pm, to reports of a single vehicle collision on Argyle Street in Ipswich.

“A red Volkswagen Passat vehicle left the road and collided with a wall in the car park of a mosque. It is understood that nobody has been injured as a result of the incident.

“The driver left the scene but was detained by officers a short time later.

“(A) 24-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and drink-driving.

“Officers are treating this incident as a straightforward road traffic collision.

“Witnesses or anybody saw the manner of driving prior to the incident are asked to contact Suffolk Police on 101 quoting reference CAD 419 of today, August 21.”
