DESPITE howling winds over the weekend, a bird-loving team of volunteers accomplished their task of building an aviary within 48 hours….just.

The weather proved the biggest obstacle to the 20-strong gang of against-the-clock workers at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary at the Stonham Barns Leisure Complex, Stonham Aspal, near Stowmarket.

But they persevered in their challenge – and today eleven birds of prey, including owls and peregrine falcons, will be hopping into their new home, thanks to their hard work.

Julie Finnis, head warden at the sanctuary who led the project thanks everyone who had taken part – particularly the building firms who spared materials and manpower to help the team soar to success.

"It was a bit of rough ride but in the face of adversity we still accomplished it."

She added that only a few finishing touches were needed today to make it a des res perch.
