HUNDREDS of walkers put their best foot forward and raised more than £30,000 for charity in the Rotary Club of East Ipswich's annual Orwell Walk.The 26th year of the event saw people completing a shorter 11-mile or 25-mile route from Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich to Trimley along the riverbanks, and back again via Levington and Nacton.
HUNDREDS of walkers put their best foot forward and raised more than £30,000 for charity in the Rotary Club of East Ipswich's annual Orwell Walk.
The 26th year of the event saw people completing a shorter 11-mile or 25-mile route from Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich to Trimley along the riverbanks, and back again via Levington and Nacton.
There were regular checkpoints along the route, where walkers could rest or catch a minibus lift back to the start.
Rotarian and walk organiser Lewis Tyler from Capel St Mary said walkers had raised a total of £30,647.
A quarter of the proceeds goes towards expenses and Rotary Club-supported charities, and the rest is donated to charities chosen by individual walkers.
Proceeds in past years topped £44,000 in 1998, £50,000 in 1999, then £30,000 in 2001.
His wife Mitzi today added: "About 800 people took part, from all over the area."
